The holidays are over and the new year has begun. Here are the 4th quarter updates from 2025 and a look forward into 2026 from the LDLD Board.
Starry Stonewort Project Plan
For 2026, the DNR recommendations for SSW will essentially remain the same – to only conduct management (hand-pulling or DASH) in locations where it is creating a monoculture that is topping out and preventing navigation/recreation. Our initial "Early Detection & Response” grant funding was spent in 2025. We have the option to submit an application for one more EDR grant. After that, we will need to submit an application for “competitive” grant funding.
Lake Denoon Boat Launch Replacement
The City of Muskego is planning to dredge the Lake Denoon Boat Launch in 2026 and replace the boat launch in 2027. This is the only public boat launch on Lake Denoon in the City of Muskego. The boat launch is overgrown and needs to be redesigned to make it easier for boaters to load and unload their boats. The 2027 plan is to provide a new concrete ramp, new pier and new driving pattern for drivers. The footprint of the boat launch will remain the same. This project will need approval by the City of Muskego Common Council. The board continues to monitor this project and will communicate information as it becomes available.
Update from the city on January 12:
Dredging permit is being submitted to WDNR in January/February 2026
Once the permit has been issued. The City will obtain bids for this work. This is specialized work but the city knows a couple of contractors who do this work.
The plan would be to dredge in the Fall 2026. The city might be able to do this work in Spring, however they need to avoid any fish spawning. Also the city wants to try and avoid the busiest use of the lake access point as well.
Clean Boats Clean Water (CBCW)
The LDLD CBCW watercraft inspection program for 2025 has ended. During the year, 6 boat inspectors spent 424 hours (200+ hours at each launch) performing boat and trailer checks and educating boaters on how to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species at the Denoon Park and Hart Drive boat launches. During the summer, our boat inspectors talked with 321 people (254 at Denoon Park & 67 at Hart Drive). There were 142 boats launched (110 at Denoon Park & 32 at Hart Drive) and of those boats, 17 boats had been on other lakes in less than 5 days prior. This program is made possible by a 75% matching grant from the WDNR.
The board unanimously approved and submitted a CBCW grant application for 2026 and will be soliciting for paid inspectors in the spring.
Free Fishing Weekends
The WDNR has designated January 17 & 18 and June 6 & 7 as “Free Fishing Weekends” in 2026. For more information, visit the Wisconsin DNR website.
